More than 1,000 surgical procedures are performed at the Thoracic Centre each year. Here also patients suffering from lung diseases, aneurysms and tumours or damages to the gullet are operated on. The treatment of arrhythmias and so-called maze surgery for the treatment of atrial fibrillation are techniques where the hospital excels.
All patients with heart or lung disease at the University Hospital are admitted to the Thoracic Centre. It was formed in 1994 by combining the departments of heart diseases, lung diseases and allergology, thoracic surgury, anaesthesiology and clinical physiology (diagnostic laboratories). Thereby the Thoracic Centre ensures that all the various disciplines collaborate effectively on the patient's behalf.
The Thoracic Centre is especially noted for its capabilities in treating coronary disease, valve abnormalities and congenital heart problems, as well as for evaluation and catheter or surgical interventions.
As non-surgical methods of treating heart disease become more effective, the use of percutaneous angioplasty and of catheter ablation of tacky arrhythmias has increased significantly. Recently an ultra-modern section for treating serious arrhythmia was inaugurated.
The lung clinic has a strong record of success in evaluating and treating airway allergies and asthma. It is also known to have a solid competence in advanced treatment of lung cancer and surgery related to emphysema.
The diagnostic capacities of the Thoracic Centre are excellent, including nuclear diagnostics, PET diagnostics and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging).
