Plastic Surgery
The Department of Plastic Surgery carries out plastic surgery, and burns treatment in both institutionalised and out-patient care.
The department has its focus on reconstructive procedures on patients where there is a very high medical need. This comprises treatment of children with malformations such as schisis of the lip, jaw or palate and other face, skin or ear malformations. This also includes reconstructive surgery, such as after facial surgery to remove malignant tumours or treatment after complex facial trauma.
A highly specialised section has its focus on reconstruction utilising microsurgical techniques. Common procedures are reconstruction of breasts after surgery for cancer, reconstruction after ENT-tumours and cover of open fractures or other open large wounds. More than 100 free flap procedures are carried through each year.
The Uppsala University Hospital Burn Unit is one of Sweden's two highly specialised centres set up to provide advanced care for patients with major or complicated burns. The burn unit includes a research department headed by Sweden's only professor in intensive and burn care. There is also a special consultant position in intensive care anaesthesiology. The results of the care at the unit are on par with the best reported. About 40% of the patients are children and the unit has capacity for allowing their parents to remain with them 24-hours a day.
