Orthopaedics

The University Department of Orthopaedics is the largest in Sweden, both as to number of beds and to the number of highly specialised subunits.

The Department not only serves the local area, but admits patients from a large geographic region covering central Sweden. Most of the patients require advanced surgery related to fractures, especially in connection with multiple trauma.

In addition, the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery has a special reputation for delayed reconstructions following complications relating to fractures and for surgery related to pelvic fractures. Patients with acute fractures or with conditions resulting from such are referred even from other parts of the country.

The same is true for back surgery, a speciality where the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Centre of Clinical Neuroscience collaborate closely. The clinic has developed special procedures for stabilizing vertebral fractures and metastases with excellent results.

There is also highly specialised work at the clinic for diagnosis and treatment of degenerative back diseases, such as slipped discs and spinal stenosis.

Another specialisation is using the llizarov technique for correcting congenital or acquired bone length variances. The technique is also used to treat damage from trauma where the bone tissue loss is extensive and in rare cases for treatment of extreme dwarfism.

The clinic is also home to the Gåskola (Walking School) which is responsible for fitting amputees from all over Sweden with proper prostheses.
