Oncology

The Department of Oncology at the University Hospital of Uppsala possesses extensive and comprehensive knowledge covering the entire spectrum of its discipline, all aimed at providing optimal therapy for cancer patients.

The diagnostic work-up and staging of tumours are facilitated by means of excellent radiological resourses, including positron emission tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography, as well as advanced pathological techniques.

The Department has expertise in the pre and postoperative chemo and radiotherapy of all solid malignancies. Furthermore, therapy includes high-dose chemotherapy with autologous bone-marrow stem cell support in the treatment of patients with lymphoma, breast cancer and testicular teratoma.

The Department of Oncology was one of the first institutions in the world to incorporate high precision, three-dimensional dose planning into its radiotherapy programmes. In addition, it is the only facility in Scandinavia for advanced proton beam radiotheraphy. Different forms of brachytheraphy is an integral modality in the treatment of localized prostatic adenocarcinoma.

The Department of Oncology obtains the largest grants for cancer research from Swedish Cancer Society of all Swedish cancer treatment institutes.

An extensive area of research with multiple clinical spin-off projects is the use of radio-labelled peptides and monoclonal antibodies aimed at the diagnosis and treatment of diverse malignancies.

The predictive testing of individual tumour sensitivity to chemotheraphy is a fundamental part of our research programme, with the specific long-term aim of providing optimal cancer therapy for each individual patient.
