Centre of Clinical Neuroscience
The basic concept of the Centre of Clinical Neuroscience is to form a functionally integrated, multi-disciplinary neurological care facility which assembles all necessary resources around the patient.
The medical work is carried out within a number of so-called operational areas encompassing the efforts of different specialists. Those patients whose conditions do not readily fit into any of the operational areas are placed in a "general" category within each speciality.
The Centre of Clinical Neuroscience was created by combining the departments of neurosurgery, neurology, rehabilitation medicine and clinical neurophysiology into one unit. In addition, a close working relationship exists with such units as neuroanaesthesia, neuroradiology, neuropathology, the PET centre, and juvenile neurology, as well as the medical, eye and ear clinics.
ProfilesProfile areas within the centre are
- treatment of movement disorders including stereotaxic surgery
- skull base surgery including acoustic neurinomas
- epilepsy surgery
- sexology
- rehabilitation of vascular and traumatic brain damage
and spinal cord injuries
Autonomous departments of occupational therapy and psysical therapy are located within the premises. The centre also provides qualified neuropsychology.
Research and trainingAs a teaching and research centre there are university related departments in clinical neurology. Included in their work is education for medical students, specialist training and training for paramedical personnel.
Most of the patients at the Centre of Clinical Neuroscience are referred from hospitals outside the region. Generally, the time at the centre is just one link in a long care sequence, one where the home hospital is responsible for the patient both before and after their stay at Uppsala.
